Clinical Placement: welcome Georgia
We are lucky to have Master of Music Therapy student Georgia on clinical placement with Attuned Health this semester.
Georgia has a Bachelor of secondary music teaching and her primary instrument is the cello althought she also likes playing piano. She is passionate about the capacity of music to reach a range of people with varying backgrounds and support them reach their goals.
Georgia first witnessed the power of music when listening to music with her grandma who has dementia and witnessing the return of memories from her past.
What do you love about being a music therapist?
I love that we are able to use so many varying musical interventions to help the people we work with to reach their goals and improve their overall wellbeing and outlook on their day to day life. I also just love that we are able to brighten someone’s day or put a smile on someone’s face through the sharing of music.
Is there a specific music therapy moment that has stuck with your or shaped your practice? Tell us about it
On my first Music Therapy placement I experienced a really special moment between the Music Therapist and a client with dementia, where music from the client’s past was shared and this bought back memories and stories that the client shared with us, and that for me was really amazing to see and how many memories music can hold from a person’s life.
What is one thing you wish people knew about music therapy?
One thing I wish people knew about music therapy is how powerful it is in helping so many people with varying backgrounds and the scope of the goals we are able to work towards to improve our client’s quality of life and overall wellbeing.
What music or instruments do you like to play and listen to?
I’m a singer, I love to sing pop, folk, indie and rock. I’ve played piano since I was very young and now acoustic guitar too. I’m a massive Swiftie, she was my first big concert when I was 15 and I’ve since seen her many times.
You might not know…
I have a 5 year old golden retriever who I love taking for walks after work or down to the beach on a nice day on the weekends!
Georgia’s future goal is to…work with children in individual and group ettings to hel them reach their goals through different music activities.
